Luke & all,

Here is an 8-1/2' 6wt taper that I just finished and fished for the first time last weekend. It's a real powerhouse casting a WF6. I'll bet you could take a few thousandths off and have a nice 5 wt.

This is one of those tapers that sort of evolved for me over the last couple of years. On the advice of some Oregon rodmakers, I made an 8-1/2' 2-pc. Gillum Salmon taper. It was a nice 8 wt. for salmon and steelhead fishing, but a bit too heavy for the fishing I normally do. With the help of my friend Bob Norwood, I used stress curve math to convert the taper to what I hoped would be a 3 piece 6 weight. I made a mistake by using 60' of line length rather than the 50' standard used by Bob's program, and the second rod ended up casting better with a 7 wt. line. Again, a really nice rod but still a bit heavier than what I wanted. So, I adjusted the line length back to 50' and recalculated the taper for a 6 wt.. Then I used the conversion table in Bob Milward's book to recalculate the taper for hollow building for .070" wall thickness in the butt and mid sections, and then lightened the last 10" of the tip a bit to make the rod feel lighter. After one trip to the beach I'm really
  pleas
ed. It shoots 60 foot casts into the wind easily, light enough that the 14" cutthroats I hooked put a nice bend in the rod, but strong enough to bring the fish in for a quick release.

The taper is without varnish.

Hope this is of interest.
