Re Spey rod - Joseph West
Anyone ever build the Payne in Jack Howell's book?
Markus--- I love spey rods more than life itself, but I do not like 13'+
cane spey rods very much. I feel them to be too heavy in general and WAY
too tip heavy as well. To get any kind of balance, one much use a monster
old brass reel a la Mallochs or John Forrest (but you have a big heavy
Young, right?) in the 15-24oz range--- thus leading to a really heavy rig in
the 3lb+ range (or a rig so tip heavy you fight it all day if you use a
moderate weight reel).
With that said, there really are few rivers where one needs a 13'+ rod. A
decent spey caster can cover ENORMOUS amounts of water with 11-12' rods,
save some weight, and have less tip heaviness. If you are truly going to be
fishing 5/0-10/0 salmon flies with sinking or intermediate lines, then think
about the 13'+ size, but I'll play devil's advocate and say that you'll have
a more enjoyable FISHING experience with a shorter and perhaps slightly
lighter (7/8wt) rod-- and just use sink tips.
With all of this said, if anyone could make a 13' rod fishable and fun, it
is probably you.
A spey will be my next rod, too. Probably the Waara (IS that actually the
spelling of his name?)
Cheers--
Joe
