Here are the two Payne tapers....
The 197 is a 7'6", 3 piece, 5wt. These numbers came from Ed Hartzell from an
unvarnished rod.
tip..0 = .062, 6 = .086, 12 = .106, 18 = .119, 24 = .134, 30 = .152
mid.. 0 = .154, 6 = .170, 12 = .188, 18 = .200, 24 = .208, 30 = .222
butt.. 0= .230, 6=  .245, 12 = .265, 18 = .304, 24 = .350, 30 = .350

The 198 is a 7'6", 6wt in all my old catalogs but a 4 wt in the Planing forum
#57 that I got these #'s from....I've not built this rod so I have NO
opinion... but... Ron Barch in the Planing forum said, "Of the many I tried this one
stood out in the crowd.....The rod was typical Payne, smooth and powerful."
tip 0= .066, 5 = .083, 10 = .098, 15 = .112, 20 = .128, 25 = .141, 30 = .154
mid 0 = .156, 5 = .169, 10 = .181, 15 = .195, 20 = .206, 25 = .218, 30 = .232
butt 0= .234, 5 = .242, 10 = .259, 15 = .279, 20 = .340, 25 = .365, 30 = .365
Guide spacing...tip 4 1/2, 10 3/8, 17 1/2, 25 3/8
mid 2 1/8, 10 1/8, 18 1/2, 26 3/4
butt 5 1/2, 6 1/2 10mm stripper

I have no thoughts about the disparity of line weights in the 198 but maybe
Hal Bacon will have some ideas when he gets back???
