Edwards Quad #53 - Steve Trauthwein

Hello All,

I had the opportunity to cast and measure an Edwards 8'-6", 3 piece, 6
wt. yesterday. It is marked #53 - 6510.

The rod flexed all the way into the handle. The nodes were in a random
pattern. The varnish was quite heavy (I deducted .005). The rod has a
bakelite reel seat and square bakelite winding check. Garnet wraps
tipped in black (appear to be 8-10 tip wraps). The reel seat plug was
loose so I took it out for a look, the cane only came half way down the
reel seat. The biggest difference that I saw in any measurement was five
thousandths.

It was hard to judge the casting of the rod. The reel I had on it did
not balance the rod well and it was front heavy (hard to imagine what it
would take to balance it). The rod was slower than I am used to but
seemed to cast 40' of line with ease. I didn't try to push it too far as
it is in a collection and not for sale. The end of the cork was squared
and I found the handle a little small, after ten minutes of casting my
hand started to cramp.

I measured the flat spot in the middle of the rod several times. The
difference in 50 & 55 might be varnish, but this flat area is definitely
intentional.

PS Does anyone have the Queen of Waters taper? If not there is one there
I
   can measure.
