Ralph,

         If he's willing to jump up to a 9 wt, I'd recommend Jim 
Wilcox's Wolverine Creek taper that was in Power Fibers a couple of 
years back.  I made one for salmon and steelhead, and it performed 
just dandy last year up on the Muskegon.  It casts nicely in close, 
and it is a cannon if you need to get the line out.  And it's a very 
good fish fighter.  Lotsa backbone.  If you can't find the taper, let 
me know.  I have it floating around somewhere.
